As much as I love to eat food, you'd think I would like to buy food. But I hate it, whether it's here in Romania or back in the states. The idea of heading to the grocery store to deal with crappy grocery carts, sifting through produce, and giving my fellow cranky-pants shoppers the stink-eye, makes me want to poke my eye out. But I drove past a farmer's market that was busting with business that I'd never see before. I thought I could use a diversion from the usual joints I head to, so I illegally parked my car on the sidewalk like everyone else and went in.
Now I have mentioned before the greatness of Romania's farmers' markets and this place was no exception. As far as the eye could see was an expansive selection of fruits, vegetables, grains, honey, and flowers with an entire second floor (complete with elevators and escalators) for meat, dairy, bread and pastries. It was great wandering around, even when one local vendor become very confused when I asked for just five tomatoes. Not five kilos, just five, all for the fine price of 1 lei (33 cents.) I also purchased two kilos of cherries for 12 lei (4 bucks) just for fun. The only downside is while I have made improvements with not shopping for food Costco style, I got a little carried away and managed to smash all my peaches as I kept stuffing my bag with other tasty treats. But then it was a good excuse to make peach cake, peach popsicles, and peach smoothies.
